About Eccentricity
Eccentricity is characteristic
of our handmade ceramic wares. As well as being
functional, they are meant to be playful and quirky - clearly
not precisely uniform or machinemade.
Elinor is the potter who makes them at
our community pottery studio on North Stradbroke Island, off the
coast of Brisbane. She has had a long and happy
relationship with the island, and has lived there full-time
since 2004, finding daily delight in the beauty of the
environment. She especially treasures the marine life,
which she studied in close quarters as a scuba diver, and now
uses as images to decorate her mugs and other items.
Previously, she worked at the Findhorn
Pottery Studio, in Findhorn, Scotland.
The Process
Making pottery involves a number of
essential staps. In general it will be ‘hand built’ or
‘thrown’ on a wheel; most of her work is thrown on the wheel.
When making her pottery mugs, these are
the stages:
1. Preparing the clay.
2. Throwing and centering the clay on
the wheel head, and creating the form.
3. The next day, or when clay is
leatherhard, trimming the form and attaching a handle, then
leaving to dry.
4. When bone dry, decorating the mug by
hand painting with underglaze.
5. Bisque firing.
6. Applying glaze inside and out to
bisque fired items.
7. Glaze firing.
Every stage is essential, and is done
with love, care and patience. And time.

Care of your Handmade Pottery
Our mugs and dishes are made of
food-safe stoneware clay. Although they are functional and
sturdy, we recommend handwashing. Having said that, I can
report many customers tell me they put their mugs in the
dishwasher without problems. But I don’t recommend it.
